Understanding the Reality Faced by Girls in Our Communities
As part of our commitment to improving menstrual health education and dignity for girls, the Extend Love Initiative Foundation (ELI7 Foundation) has commenced a community assessment programme across schools in Bauchi State, Nigeria.
The purpose of this assessment was to listen directly to students, teachers, and school communities to better understand the challenges girls face regarding menstrual health, education, hygiene, and access to support.
Through questionnaires administered to students and teachers, we discovered that many girls still lack the confidence and knowledge to openly discuss menstrual health challenges. Some students expressed fear and discomfort when speaking about their experiences, making it difficult for them to seek the help and support they need.
Listening to Students and Teachers
Our engagement with teachers also revealed important insights. Some teachers shared that girls do approach them with menstrual-related concerns, but the necessary resources and support systems are often unavailable to adequately address these needs.
The findings highlight that the challenge is not only about awareness but also about creating an environment where girls feel safe to speak, learn, and access the resources required to stay healthy and confident in school.
Building a Sustainable Solution
These findings are strengthening our commitment to launching a comprehensive menstrual health education and hygiene programme that will provide:
- Menstrual health education for girls in underserved schools.
- Access to sanitary pads and hygiene kits.
- Teacher and community engagement to improve support systems.
- Long-term digital support through the Amara platform.
Our goal is to reach up to 6,000+ girls across Bauchi State, helping them continue their education with confidence, dignity, and the support they deserve.
